Defense
FMI delivers high-temperature composite materials, thermal protection system (TPS) solutions, and testing services that support demanding defense applications. These materials are used in mission-critical systems, including missiles, hypersonic vehicles, and rocket motors, where extreme thermal and mechanical conditions require the highest level of performance.
With over 55 years of production experience, FMI combines advanced manufacturing capabilities with proprietary processes that produce flight-proven composite materials. Our composites feature high-density, multi-directional fiber architectures that enhance thermal stability, structural integrity, and reliability in extreme environments.
FMI’s deep expertise and custom material solutions make us a trusted partner for government agencies and defense contractors. Every product is engineered for manufacturability and affordability without compromising the strength, durability, or precision required for today’s most advanced defense systems.
Thermal Protection Systems (TPS)
FMI manufactures advanced thermal protection system (TPS) components that safeguard critical assets in high-temperature defense applications. These components are deployed across a range of defense platforms, including re-entry vehicles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic vehicles, and more. FMI’s TPS solutions incorporate materials such as Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs). Each material is selected for its ability to deliver consistent performance under extreme thermal and environmental stresses. From leading edges to large-acreage TPS components, FMI continuously advances its thermal protection technologies to align with the evolving needs of the defense industry. FMI’s TPS components are known for:
- Low, predictable ablation
- Low erosion
- Reliable mechanical properties at elevated temperatures
- Highly consistent aerothermal performance
- Carbon phenolic ablatives
Re-Entry Heat Shield Solutions
FMI’s materials are integral to re-entry heat shield systems used across a range of defense platforms, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic vehicles, and defensive interceptor missiles. Our heat shields are designed to endure extreme re-entry conditions, including high thermal shock, high pressures, and high heat flux levels.
FMI uses ablative composites materials and C/C composites to create shields that perform reliably during atmospheric re-entry. These materials ablate in a controlled, predictable manner—dissipating heat through the gradual removal of the outer surface while protecting the vehicle’s internal systems.
Propulsion System Solutions
FMI’s advanced C/C composites are engineered for use in propulsion system components, particularly within solid rocket motors. These materials are used for critical parts such as motor throats and ITEs (integral throat and entrances) of rocket nozzles. They also support air-breathing propulsion and direction and attitude control systems (DACS). From initial concept through production, FMI partners with defense contractors to develop propulsion components that meet the rigorous demands of military-grade performance. Designed to function under extreme thermal and mechanical loads, FMI’s propulsion materials feature:
- Exceptional thermal shock resistance
- Predictable, low ablation rates
- High hoop strength at elevated temperatures
Materials and Technologies
Across TPS, re-entry, and propulsion applications, FMI relies on a core set of high-performance materials: Carbon/Carbon and CMCs. These composites have been selected for their robustness in the most demanding aerothermal environments and have proven their value in mission-critical defense platforms.
FMI’s proprietary manufacturing processes yield high-density, multi-directional fiber architectures that strengthen structural integrity and thermal performance. These methods support production at scale without sacrificing quality, making FMI a trusted partner for defense programs that require repeatable, reliable results.
